Jody Watley Proves She Still Has IT. CentricTV Howard Theatre Concert Review

The name Jody Watley has been an integral part of music for over three decades, and it seems the Grammy award winning R&B/Dance music diva isn’t slowing down any time soon…Click HERE to read full review.

Of the variety of wardrobe changes and modifications I wore in Washington D.C.'s concert was a custom made kimono styled black sequined paillette belted jacket/top (my design) made by Gloria Garcia-Crouch funked up with black skinny jeans and studded black pumps.

For my 80's portion of pop hits, I quickly changed into a zippered biker jacket and my signature jumbo hoop earrings to the delight of the crowd who cheered loudly as I stood there and put them on saying "I need these" - with white and black spiked studded pumps. My guys accented me with spiked studded caps, bow ties, skinny jeans, white collared shirts and blazers. The outfit was later modified as I musically traveled into a deep cut from my underground electronica foray from 1999 by adding sunglasses, a custom "Classic Valentino" hat by Gladys Tamez Millenary, and another signature that I've performed with since my Soul Train dancer days - a handheld fan for that right touch of nightlife chic attitude.

The crowd went banana's when I did another change and brought out 'the classic jacket' from my "Some Kind of Lover" and "Everything" video's. The vintage leather biker jacket with my image hand painted on the back, custom spiked, studded and rhinestoned sleeves a weighs over 100 lbs.

The concert wouldn't be complete without some Jean Paul-Gaultier; form fitted jacket, black t-shirt, black spiked belt to close with some fashion walk fabulousness on "Real Love."

Jody Watley. I Love a Great Hat.

Jody Watley in Gladys Tamez Classic Valentino.
I learned of milliner Gladys Tamez through my friend, beauty expert, consultant, nail guru and fine arts diva Shawanna Davis.

After visiting Gladys' studio in downtown Los Angeles, it was hard to resist not leaving with at least one hat. I chose "the classic Valentino,"  which I was measured for and tailored just for me - hat couture! I'm certain I'll be adding others to my hat collection. Millinery is really a lost art. To see the process and how it's done makes one appreciate the craft even more.

I love this color!

Jody Watley Attends Dukes of Melrose Launch Party

I'm  wearing a vibrant green Stella McCartney tunic dress, black slacks, and color blocked pumps in nude and orange. My bag is a studded MCM clutch from their new collection. It's always a trick to pull off fashion forward, classic, a touch of trendy while being age appropriate while still being very Jody Watley - today. I say age appropriate because I do think that everything isn't for everyone at any age..and personally there's something a little sad and desperate when you see a woman dressing as a teen or woman in her twenties. One can still be youthful and fashionable and not leave it all out there. I decided against my signature hoops, wanting the tunic to be the feature. I was wearing a thin spiked bracelet. The great thing about the tunic as well was it has pockets.

Christos Garkinos rocked a dashing red Paul Smith suit and was a perfect host along with Cameron Silver from Decades. Their series "The Dukes of Melrose" premieres March 6, 2013 on Bravo TV - don't miss it!

Jody Watley. Backstage Glam. Soul Train Awards 2012

Wearing an understated bias cut and draped custom made purple jersey gown. The look was inspired by golden era Hollywood Glam. I was torn between funky and trendy - but chose classic; though my Alexander McQueen python skull and jeweled knuckle clutch bag was a nod to that eclectic side of my style personality.

Jody Watley. Attends Harper's Bazaar Fendi Reception in Los Angeles.

Attended a casually chic cocktail reception at Fendi, The Beverly Center in Los Angeles. Christos Garkinos of Co-Owner of Decades, Avril Graham Executive Fashion and Beauty Editor of Harper's Bazaar, and Carlota Espinosa CEO and Co- Founder of Styleloot were co-hosts presenting Fendi Resort 2013.  I made the printed pants trend my own by pairing them with a black turtleneck and black Christian Louboutin's.

Jody Watley. Soul Train Awards 2012.

For the red carpet I opted for a bias cut custom made royal purple jersey gown with a train. My inspiration was a take on classic hollywood glamour. The glasses are grey Ant 'Top Off Amber' with rose colored lenses.
I always stop to acknowledge the fans who show me love - also a part of my style!

Thank You Vidal.

Vidal Sassoon was a true visionary, not just as a master of several iconic hairstyles and cutting techniques but for from what I recall the first hair guru to become celebrity stylist bringing a new glamour to Hollywood not to mention the fashion world. Vidal Sassoon also brought product branding to the mainstream. I was an early fan of his shampoo's and conditioners - loved the smell and what his products did to my hair.
During my days living in London, I went to one of his Academy's after reading an article in British VOGUE to get a bob. Being at The Vidal Sassoon Academy was my first experience in a truly high end salon. I was fascinated by the coloring and cuts being done and felt very pampered. My stylist Aitch Peters went on to become Senior Creative Director for Vidal Sassoon.

My second visit was for a version of an early mohawk. Over the years I've worn different incarnations of haircuts created by Sassoon including the Bob and the Pixie cut (worn in my GAP ad) made famous by Mia Farrow. His style is still visible in various variations today and no doubt will be for all time.

Jody Watley. Classic Style. Vintage In Norma Kamali.

Vintage, 1989.

In Norma Kamali with Shalamar Vintage 1982.

I have so many favorite Norma Kamali style moments. The Kamali Boutique in New York 56th, just off 5th Avenue was one of my many 'must do' first shopping stops, even if just to look around. To experience the Glamour of the store before fashion and style became commercial and perhaps jaded remains pivotal. Kamali is another trailblazer who has always gone her own way. I've recently learned more about her and thanks to modern technology exchanged Twitter messages. I was able to let her know not assuming she knew how long I'd worn her clothes that I was a longtime fan and appreciator of her work.
I've worn her clothes since the 70's. Old or classic Hollywood is a longtime influence on me, since I was a little girl; there's a timelessness to it all.

Kamali's ruched 40's inspired swimdress is still sold as a part of her collection and is flattering to any woman's figure as summer approaches.

Timeless in 2012.

A Sense of Style: Individual Expression

One of my favorite places to travel to is Japan. I appreciate the culture and most everything about it. I can spend hours just people watching because the fashion is so eclectic. Most of all Japanese street fashion is always about individual flair, which is what having 'style' is all about. The kids don't dress to 'trend', it seems they really dress as a means of personal expression.
