I Like His Style. Steve Jobs

Regardless if you like Apple products (I happen to like them very much and well as the simplicity of design). I remember the first family computer, and I would call out to my daughter to 'get me on the internet!' when she was in Junior High; or would assist with her numerous essays and the consequences of not saving documents if the computer crashed. Remember the slow sound of dial up - waiting regardless of your system? We can laugh about it now. Aesthetically, and performance wise Apple always appealed to my sensibilities and my children.  I was thrust into what would become a household staple for millions of people.  We still have each model of the iPod collecting dust, as newer sleeker models have been released. I enjoy walking into an Apple store, always chic in it's simplicity regardless of where you are in the world. He was a teacher of 'brand building' and was astute in building anticipation and excitement with each new innovation.
Though iPods in some ways may be responsible for diminishing the appreciation of the full experience of an album as a whole - it's the fault of the music industry for ignoring the shifting paradigms before they happened.  Jobs as a CEO did in selling his music device which made music portable. I don't miss schlepping CD's when I travel and appreciate the ease of plugging in my iPod in the car.

Steve Jobs was an undeniable innovator and visionary. He is the Thomas edison of the new millennium; a man who set out to change the world and achieved it. His innovations caused other computer, cell phone and animation companies to follow suit. To be fired from a company you originally beginning in your  home garage, only to return and take it to unimaginable heights is inspirational. Read more: Here

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma-which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other people's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." - Steve Jobs

He was also adopted and a college dropout..this speech is profound.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Classic Style. H by Halston Fall 2011

I've been watching "Project Runway" as has been the case since Season 1. Last night's challenge was a modern twist on 70's style. I really liked Anya who is emerging as my favorite this season; I love her distinct sense of personal style.  The jumpsuit she created for last night's challenge was a winner and will be sold on Paperlime. Anya really handled the pressure and dilemma of losing her money on the first trip to MOOD.
Viktor is also emerging as a strong contender for final 3. Josh must learn to take criticism better perhaps considering broadening his visual and design horizons regardless of the decade he was born. Bert wasn't as grating and dour.

The current glamorous ad campaign for H by Halston made me think of the challenge.

Ankle boots have been around off and on since the 80's. Today's modern looks offer a range of options from various luxury designer brands (Jimmy Choo. Christian Louboutin, Brian Atwood, etc.) to more affordable brands (Nine West, Steve Madden, etc).
Dress them up or down - funky, chic or something in between.

Life Notes. Justice For Michael Jackson

The justice system at times falls short, we see it all the time unfortunately. Nothing will bring the inimitable Michael Jackson back, but there is so much shadiness being exposed in this trial so far. Conrad Murray should pay for his crime and negligence (and perhaps many others as well). Murray was the last person we know of to be with Michael and on the payroll as his personal tour 'physician'. As I follow the trial I am trying to keep an open mind and listen to all of the evidence - using common sense as well. I also I get the feeling that there's probably more to this story than we will ever know. Following the trial is disturbing and sad on many levels.

It's unfortunate, haunting and macabre what has been revealed this far in the trial. Michael was isolated, enabled and surrounded by many including including professionals, those who claimed to be 'friends' who did not have his best interests at heart - clearly.  fame and wealth can take more than it gives in the end. Illusion vs. reality, fame vs dysfunction - it's all there and so much more.

My thoughts and prayers are with Michael's children, family, especially his mother. I can't even imagine how painful and difficult this entire ordeal must be for them.

Vesta Williams and Women In Music.

Jody Watley pictured with Vesta Williams
Hearing the shocking and sad news of the untimely passing of R&B powerhouse Vesta Williams makes me feel for her family and friends. The sudden loss of music and film stars in my own age demographic or those that I've grown up appreciating always gives me an even deeper sense of pause and reflection.
It was just a few months ago on The Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage Cruise that I met Vesta, who was onboard for Sheryl Lee Ralph's DIVAS as well, along with Angela Winbush and rapper Yo-Yo. I'd been a last minute addition and was happy to meet these music ladies for the first time.
After exchanging hello's once being introduced, Vesta wanted to apologize if I'd ever been offended that she used to make jokes and do impressions of me in her show some years ago. I laughed and said I'd heard about it, but wasn't offended at all. I told her I'm sure it was all in fun and I have a great sense of humor. Her comedic skills and effervescent personality were apparent.
The ladies all mentioned that though fans might assume all artists may know each other; it's actually a very isolated journey. Even if you are doing a show with someone, it doesn't guarantee making a connection. This get together was acknowledged as a rarity.
The ladies and I (including Vesta) ended up sharing stories of the harsh realities and struggles of being a woman in this industry over lunch onboard the ship.
This is true regardless of mainstream crossover, R&B or local level success. It was an empowering conversation ending with us all wishing each other well and thoughts of creating more opportunities amongst us (touring or spot dates in select cities) despite obvious roadblocks. We acknowledged being aware that many booking agents hold an antiquated view that women can't work together or fans just have no interest to see them together - regardless of how many hits you may have or how great the show may be. Sexism like most 'isms is alive and well. The conversation was full of laughs as well as a shared understanding.

Make no mistake, the music business can be treacherous and pressure filled for men as well. The start of the trial against Conrad Murray and the tragic and suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Michael Jackson is a sad reminder of that fact.

It's no secret though that women (especially of color) are the first to be marginalized, dismissed or abused in some way. It takes a lot to not end up jaded or beat down emotionally - especially if you've been at this for any length of time. This is another reason some women in music choose to exit the business entirely, limit their own exposure choosing other outlets or simply remain closer to home in more domestic and family oriented environments. There are also those who have no choice as primary providers than to try to take whatever work you can get. It's not as glamorous as portrayed - this business of music.

I remember being 19 years old on my first promotional tour in Shalamar. I was groped by the Program Director of a major R&B station while posing for the customary photo when visiting a radio station. Further, he attempted to have me sit on his lap at his desk for another photo and became agitated when I refused and pulled away. Though new and naive to the business and being intimidated by the situation, I expressed my anger and disapproval at his actions. Instead of someone coming to my aid, I was laughed at and told to sop being so 'emotional'. I was subsequently reprimanded severely by the label owner/manager for not accommodating this apparently powerful Program Director. He'd threatened to pull our music off of the playlist and kill the song. I was made to apologize, though I did nothing wrong. It was more about the airplay than my being harassed. In my own early learning curve, I knew being a girl in this business wasn't going to be easy - especially if you stood up for yourself.
The ladies and I discussed that it seemed to some degree unless you were willing to practically sell your soul, lower your standards, self-respect, professionalism and expectation of other's - it's even harder. You end up labeled "Difficult." for having standards and requirements.  Some are fortunate enough to become a part of 'the machine', inner circles of the old boy's network of R&B, or other political networks that make the road easier.
The process can be draining or you can also find yourself blackballed for your principles.

Learning of the news about Vesta made me reflect back on the conversation as well as being a part of this industry for so many decades. Women; most of us while navigating the instabilities of the business of music are often wives and mothers, stepmothers as well, adding to the pressure. As a Mom I always put my daughter and son first which may have cost professionally but personally it's the greatest reward - we choose our priorities.
What all of us learned on the ship that day was though our journeys are individual there are similarities to our stories regardless of the levels of perceived success. Fans have no idea of what it takes to try to make it in this business. Some also battle inner turmoil - like the great Phyllis Hyman. I thought about her as well over these past few days.
Though appearance is a part of the music and film business (always has been and always will be especially for women) each of us wants nothing more than for the music to be heard and appreciated by as many as possible while remaining as authentic as possible.

Rejection is common requiring growing a tough outer exterior (especially in today's culture of scandal, sensationalism, mean- spiritedness whether anonymous or from bloggers). Add in highs, lows and the sometimes (more often than not) unfulfilled dreams no matter how great you sing or dance. As you grow older (post 30's) there is even less of a supportive framework for women in music - especially black women. The juggling act of pursuing your goals and dreams comes with sacrifices an often-constant dance of walking on eggshells of ego dynamics in personal relationships as well. It' can be tough to maintain relationships not because you're 'crazy' as we get labeled, but simply because some men generally find it hard to be in a woman's shadow, or be secondary in the financial landscape. In essence, while the fruits of your labor may or may not be great they come with a price seen and unseen to the public.

Vesta let me know she had a new perception of me after talking with me on the cruise - she'd misjudged who she thought I was or what my journey may have been as well something also related from the other women. The universe has it's own way about things, and I'm sure that for whatever reason none of us may know - we were all supposed to meet that day.

From what I've read, Vesta was happy that TV-One was doing an Unsung episode on her and looking forward to the future despite the obstacles. She'd released a new single and video titled "Dedicated", and had apparently just returned from a concert performance. Vesta was active and seemed to she have much to look forward to.

The prescription drug scenario reminds me of gifted actor Heath Ledger. According to reports he'd mixed medications not realizing the combinations could be fatal. These accidents are probably common unfortunately and in my view more needs to be done to educate people and perhaps more monitoring of those issuing prescriptions so generously.

As I always say we must take great care and nurture ourselves; tending to mind, body and spirit regardless of your chosen profession. Life is short and unpredictable, as we all know. Carefully choose who is allowed in your life personally and professionally; LIVE and enjoy life not just pursue a career.
I'm thinking about and praying for Vesta that she rest in peace - another one gone too soon.
Actually, I'm also thinking and praying for all of my fellow artists in the music business on the grind - as well as those young ones who are at the beginning of their journey.
My condolences to Vesta's family and friends who knew her best. The heavenly choir just received another voice.

Life Notes. Thought Of The Day

I've  collected greeting /art cards since I was a teenager. You never know when a positive message might be needed for yourself or to be shared with others. This is a beautiful one with a great message I picked up this weekend from one of my favorite card and gift boutiques in Los Angeles. You can't tell from the scan but it also has a bit of sparkle around the earring. Gorgeous.

There's nothing like giving or receiving a handwritten note or card. A Facebook,Twitter or text message can never take the place of that.

Vitamin E is a natural anti-oxidant with numerous health benefits. Learn more: here.

Vitamin E oil is great for nourishing dry hair and skin. I bought a bottle for less than five bucks at Trader Joe's recently and have been using it daily, adding it to my beauty regimen.

Donna Karan Spring 2012

From the Donna Karan Spring 2012 - that hair is snatched! It's difficult to pull off the 'dewy' skin without looking as if you just stepped away from a hot stove but I like the fabric wrap on the ponytail.
The collection is inspired by time spent in Haiti.

Individual Style. Miki House Japan

Photographed in Osaka. Miki House Japan

Seeing this shoe display made me reminisce of when my son and daughter were little. Japan has the best children's clothes; so stylish and fun. I must say the clothes are always age appropriate as well.

I know I spent a small fortune there when my children were little, to see the joy was always worth it.

Thought Of The Day.

One of the cool things about Japan, is that positive messages are a part of their culture. You can find fun or inspirational quotes from children's lunch boxes and utensils to department store walls. I was at the cashier's booth paying for gifts and this was the sign in front of me so I had to snap a photo of it.
I believe it's true, very in line with it's the journey not the destination.

I'm appreciative to do what I love and never take it for granted.

Art and Music. Jody Watley

Jody Watley and Takako Utsumi (Illustrator). Tokyo, Summer 2011

On my trip to Japan last week, I had the pleasure of meeting Takako Utsumi who me presented me with these incredible illustrations. She did a phenomenal job with the detailing (down to including my signature handheld fan open and closed). I love the Japanese Kimono designs and use of color as well.

I'm wearing a piece of illustrated art on a honey colored T-shirt with my likeness from "Larger Than Life", my second album from 1989.  I don't know the name of the guy who drew it, but I remember he gave it to me in New York City when I performed at Summerstage with Masters At Work back in 2003 (I sang 'I Love to Love' which also featured Roy Ayers). I was in awe of this illustration and still am. I'm sure photographer Steven Meisel, who was behind the lens for the original photo would also approve. It's cool when people get the details of a person's features and the nuances that make us all unique. I'd like to reproduce this shirt for my online boutique - maybe the artist will read this blog and say yes to the idea.

I have a few gorgeous giant art pieces hanging in my house that were given to me professionally framed. I've also kept many small works of art that I also cherish. that someone would take their time to create their art because of their appreciation of mine is something I never take for granted or dismiss.

My green pashmina and lace fan are also gifts - I'm a lucky lady!

Classic Style. Ashford & Simpson

Beyond writing so many classic songs for themselves and so many others from Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, and more - Ashford & Simpson always gave you fashion and complimented each other well in music, love, life and style. I discovered designer Norma Kamali from Ashford & Simpson back in the late 70s when I was in the group Shalamar, as well as Charles Jourdan shoes. Onstage, Nick had so much charisma right along with Valerie. They were truly a dynamic duo and remained stylish through the years.

I had the pleasure of being a guest on their radio show several years ago and we shared great conversation.
Nick encouraged me to go back to singing in my 'money tone', we all had a laugh about it. Both appreciated my exploration and broadening of my music and choosing to sing more in the warmer register of my range - but I totally understood and appreciated the reminder from him.

RIP Nick Ashford. My thoughts and prayers are with Valerie Simpson, their daughters, family and friends during this difficult time.

Nature's Beauty. Almond Butter

One of my favorite snacks is green apples with peanut butter. A friend recently suggested I try almond butter - I'm hooked!

As it turns out, it's considered a healthier option to peanut butter. Almond butter is low in saturated fat (zero trans fats) and contains natural quantities of calcium, protein, fiber, magnesium, vitamin E and folic acid. All of these nutrients are great for lowering cholesterol and good for your heart.

Leopard 'Shatter'

At my nail appointment this week, I opted for the army green on my toes. I intend to try sapphire next. The YSL blue looks divine.

I've done color blocking on the nails a new and modern twist on the standard french manicure. I'm digging the "Shatter" leopard nails - must try that!

Updating your nails is a nice way to spruce up your look without breaking the bank.

Classic Style. New Vinyl

New limited edition 12" singles from The Step Kids " Legend In My Own Mind" on Stones Throw Records and "Little White Doves" from Dirty Vegas. What really caught my eye is the white vinyl - very cool.

Some aficionados still make vinyl available for collectors, even if they don't have a turntable; and of course it serves the niche based DJ culture worldwide. There's really nothing like holding the music in your hands. Vinyl reminds us that music is more like art as opposed to the digital format which makes music feel more like data, which it isn't in my opinion.

There was nothing like getting a vinyl album or 12" single looking at the artwork, reading liner notes and dropping the needle. There's a new generation discovering what that feeling and process was like, through these types of special pressings.

I've joked that whenever I finish "Chameleon" it will released on vinyl only initially - just because..

Music Notes. Little Dragon "Crystalfilm"

I love this song from band 'Little Dragon'. The fan-made video using footage from the classic 1966 film 'The Endless Summer' is juxtaposed perfectly as visual accompaniment to the lyrics and music.

The new 'Little Dragon' album is called "Ritual Union". I've discovered countless gems and artists in music beyond the limitations of the usual over-saturated and ever limited play lists in 'commercial' fare dating back to over a decade ago when I discovered and immersed myself in the incredible and vibrant underground music scene. Online stations, blogs, NPR Music Programs, etc -- venture out.

His Shoe Game. Missoni Desert Boots and Kenny

Missoni Desert Boots. Fall/Winter 2011

A new bit of flair added to the classic 'Desert Boot' from Missoni. I have to say these made me think of being in Junior High when they were a must have for girls and boys who wanted to feel cool and in style. If you had on some desert boots, you walked with a bit more attitude. This is a fond memory thinking of it now.

I had a crush on a boy named Kenny (isn't there a cute guy named Kenny at every school?), who wore a light brown pair all the time. Kenny was a star basketball player at the school and a senior (I was in 7th grade). He was tall, thin, ridiculously good-looking with paperbag brown skin. Kenny had a great smile with a big afro (a lot of girls were suckers for a guy with a big fro' and I was one of them too for a minute). The hilarious thing is Kenny didn't know I or any of my friends were alive, lol. My girlhood friends and I knew exactly when he'd be coming down the hall changing classes and where he sat during lunch.
We'd all be scrambling around and walking past him trying to be seen by him, like most of the girls at the school - but to no avail. Roller-skating was huge at the time. It was the thing to do on Saturday afternoons after Soul Train went off. Kenny was of course 'The Best Skater' and smooth as silk. To my shock, Kenny came up to me and asked to 'couple skate' once and I nearly fainted inside but played it totally cool. My friends and I gave each other a quick look sharing our own private moment as only we knew when it came to our collective Kenny crush.
All I could think of as we went around the rink was don't trip or fall and embarrass myself and most of all don't mess up and embarrass Kenny - as we glided around that floor in perfect precision.

Kenny and his desert boots had it going on.
